A History with Strong Roots
As legend has it, Stroud’s offered pan-fried chicken as a special one Fourth of July and the chicken sold out quickly.
During WWII, beef and pork, Stroud’s main BBQ ingredients, were subject to wartime rationing. Stroud’s was forced to switch gears, thus becoming the home of pan-fried chicken. Helen hired 2 southern women whose recipe vaulted Stroud’s into legendary status.
Despite ownership changes over the years, the recipes at Stroud’s remains exactly the same today as they were in 1942.
Stroud’s recipes have not gone unnoticed. The pan-fried chicken restaurants have won several awards, most notably the James Beard Foundation “America’s Classics” award in 1998. The award honors the country’s legendary family-owned restaurants. It’s still the only KC restaurant to receive a James Beard award to date!
Stroud’s has the same philosophy today as it did over 80 years ago… to serve delicious, home-cooked meals in a fun, friendly atmosphere.
